Approval of a miracle
Rome-Italy, April 15, 2014 (Communicationes).- Pope Francis has approved the miracle attributed to Blessed Kuriakose Elias, founder of the Congregation of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate. Blessed Kuriakose Elias was born in Kainakari, Kerala, India, on February 10, 1805, and died in Koonammavu in 1871. He entered the Seminary in 1818 and was ordained to the priesthood inn1829.
He cofounded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate and was the Congregation’s first Superior General. He consolidated the foundations of the first house of the Congregation in Mannanam in 1831 and made his profession in the Congregation he founded in 1855. In 1866 he collaborated in the foundation of the Sisters of the Mother of Carmel. In 1861 he was named Vicar General of the Syro-Malabar Church. He was a tireless defender of the unity of the Church in the face of the schism of Rocco. He worked untiringly on the spiritual renewal of the Syro-Malabar Church. He was a great man of prayer. Great devotee and propagator of the worship and adoration of the Holy Eucharist and devotion to the Virgin Mary. His mortal remains rest in Mannanam since 1899.
