Fr. Stephen Watson, OCD, is the Provincial of the Western U.S.A. Province of the Discalced Carmelites. A native of Baltimore, Md., he entered the Order in 1977. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish from Santa Clara University he studied theology at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley from 1980-1984. He was ordained to the priesthood in June of 1984. He served at the El Carmelo Retreat House in Redlands the first six years of his priesthood. He then experienced parish life as Pastor in Tucson, Az. and Alhambra, CA. In 1999 Fr. Stephen was elected to serve as the Provincial of his Province. Four years later he was elected to serve on the General Council of the Order and took up residence in Rome. When his six year term in Rome ended he volunteered to work in the Uganda mission of his Province and was there for nearly two years before returning to the United States. He was Student Master for two years at the Province’s House of Studies in Mount Angel, Oregon. In 2014 he was again elected Provincial. Fr. Stephen has traveled extensively due to his responsibilities in the Order. His special interest is St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross.
